On Sunday 21st January Sunset
Coast Archers were host to the first GP of 2007.
It was the 3rd
consecutive year that the Club has organised this FITA target tournament,
now known as the Sunset Star.
Last year it was
held in early June, but Sunset Coast wanted to hold the event earlier
because of the possibility of rain at that
time.
This meant we were gambling on the weather not being too hot and were very lucky in that the
Sundays prior to, and after the
event, were stinkers while the day itself lay
somewhere in the middle.
Entries were
slightly down on last year but there were still 50 Archers to face the
whistle.

There was a warm
easterly blowing in the morning which didn’t help the longer distance
scores but by the halfway mark it died down and although the heat was
starting to be felt by competitors only a few were unable to continue on
to the final targets but that was more due to equipment failure than the
conditions. The sea breeze when it came in was a warm one so all it did
was make the last ends a little more difficult.
Any club that has
run a GP event knows how much work is involved from getting entrants,
allocating targets, organising score sheets and trophies, marking the
field, collecting targets from Whiteman Park and setting them up on the
day while making breakfast, then lunch. Then you have to take the targets
down while the scores are collated and then do the trophy presentations
while the targets go back to Whiteman Park. It makes for a long day.
The 1st
GP that the Sunset Coast Archers were host to, was organised using family members of
Archers as there weren’t enough Members in the Club to do the job. This
year we
were able to work on a Roster system with the majority of Club Members,
and some
family members, putting their hand up to help.
Unfortunately this meant that we were only able to field 2 competitors, Chris Lewkowski who
still wandered around with a
worried look on his face all day, and John
Carr who, at the start of the lunch break, ran off to put the early scores
into a computer.
All in all it was a
successful day and Sunset Coast look forward to having more of their Archers
competing in the upcoming GP’s.

Brett would like to everyone who helped out including Warren at Bravo Hire
